Dr. Joseph Nichols, Jr.

Dr. Nichols was born and raised in Atlanta. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS in Biology and a MS in Microbiology. He earned his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1986. He completed his general surgery residency and colorectal fellowship at the Ochsner Foundation in New Orleans.

He returned to Atlanta and joined the practice of his father, Dr. Joseph J. Nichols, Sr. in 1992. He practiced a broad range of colorectal surgery with his father for six years and in solo practice after his father’s retirement. He joined Piedmont Colorectal Associates in 2008. He is a Fellow of the American College of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and is board certified in colon and rectal surgery.

He is certified in laparoscopic and robotic assisted minimally invasive colorectal surgery and has found this to offer a great benefit to his colon surgery patients. He also performs transanal robotic assisted rectal surgery, allowing selected benign rectal polyps and small cancers to be removed with outpatient surgery with no skin incisions. He enjoys doing colonoscopies as well as a full spectrum of anorectal procedures.

Dr. Nichols’ other interests including model railroading, computers, and general repair. He lives in Atlanta with his wife Lynn, and their two daughters.
