What is Constipation?
Constipation is the term given to infrequent bowel movements or difficulty with passing bowel movements. There are many causes for constipation some of which include a diet low in fiber and water, medication side effects, lack of regular exercise, and hormone imbalances. A gastroenterologist or primary care physician can determine if any of these causes are the reason for constipation.
Constipation Treatment Options
Constipation is usually managed with dietary changes, lifestyle modification, and gentle laxatives. If the symptoms of constipation are severe and not responding to medical therapy, a patient may be referred to a colorectal surgeon. The surgeon will perform a series of tests to determine if there is a surgical option to treat the patient’s constipation. There are a few surgical options available, and the providers at Piedmont Colorectal Associates can tailor a treatment plan for each patient.
