The Benefits of Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery

Robotic Surgery BenefitsRobotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System is a minimally invasive surgery that has proven highly effective in the treatment of colorectal cancer and other conditions that affect the colon and rectum. Piedmont Colorectal Associates, a team of board-certified colorectal surgeons in Atlanta that possesses over 35 years of combined experience, is proud to offer patients the most advanced and state-of-the-art technologies and techniques available today, including the da Vinci® Surgical System.

Read on as we discuss the benefits of this innovative system.

Requires Smaller Incisions

Traditional open surgery requires the creation of a large incision on the abdomen (typically six to 12 inches in length) that allows the surgeon to access the abdominal organs. Minimally invasive surgeries, including both laparoscopic surgery and robotic-assisted surgery, involve the creation of small incisions, each approximately one-half inch long. The surgeon is able to view the abdominal organs on a monitor that displays through a camera inserted through the small incisions. Smaller incisions offer a number of advantages, including fewer traumas to the body, less scarring and minimized risk of infections and other complications.

Enhanced Precision

Laparoscopy uses a single camera and long-shafted surgical instruments that cannot bend or rotate. These instruments are directly controlled by the surgeon performing the operation. As with open surgery, there is a degree of risk that comes with laparoscopy due to human error using handheld instruments.

The da Vinci system reduces this risk as it features a magnified 3D high-definition console that translates the surgeon’s hand movements into smaller and precise movements of tiny instruments that operate on the body. Thanks to a jointed-wrist design, the instruments exceed the range of motion of the instruments used for laparoscopy and the natural range of motion of the human hand. In addition, the robot filters out hand tremors, increasing accuracy and precision. The da Vinci’s enhanced designed also provides the surgeon optimal vision during surgery, thanks to the state-of-the-art, 3D, high-definition video monitor and camera.

Recovery Is Faster

Thanks to the da Vinci system’s enhanced precision, recovery with robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery is faster. Patients also tend to experience less side effects and post-op pain with robotic-assisted surgery than other surgeries.
